WMAR - Honored by BMI for 60 Years in Broadcasting

WmartpThe Baltimore Museum of Industry is hosting an exhibit of artifacts, vintage television cameras and TV sets, film and tape to celebrate WMAR's 60th year. (First a little background from the official WMAR website: In 1997 WMAR-TV celebrated 50 years of broadcast excellence. It is Maryland's first commercial television station and the 11th in the nation. The station was the site of many technological breakthroughs: first with a color film processor for television news and production, and first Zoom camera lens for film and tape cameras. It has also had a noteworthy staff, including Janet Covington, the first woman director [1948].)

The exhibit, Charm City TV: Sixty Years of WMAR, opens to the public tomorrow, October 26th. While at first glance it seems to appeal to old-time radio and TV buffs, it could actually be a great deal of fun by way of this example of a WMAR original production -- The Collegians. Collegians was a local talent show that aired in the 1960s. Note: You must have your audio turned on to truly enjoy these clips. And check out the curmudgeon MCing this program.

There are two more clips from this show.... If you want more visit YouTube.Com and search for WMAR.

I'm thinking that anyone who has ever wondered how John Waters was inspired, should visit this exhibit. And, check out this camera man standing on a chair. You've gotta love it.

Citi Logo Soars Over Baltimore

Citi_financial_baltimore_4

What's this? Citi Financial signage being hoisted to the top of their building at Saratoga and Saint Paul on a Sunday afternoon? Yep, and as of now it's still tightly under wraps.

I see color under that wrap (the red on the arch) and from the placement of the logo it will surely be illuminated. And if it is, that's great news.

Way too few of Baltimore's tall buildings are lit properly at night. The crown of the Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore Hotel is a prime example. It's magnificent topper and is completely dark. Radisson Hotels should be ashamed!

Lights of all kinds bring energy to a city. Where there is light at night, there's attraction -- and not just for moths.

The Citi logos are going up on all sides of the building. What a welcome addition to the Vertical Neighborhood.

"Visit My Baltimore" is Gaining Steam - And, in a Good Way with Videos

When Baltimore's GET IN ON IT campanign launched last year I was dubious. And on national television, so was Jay Leno (he laughed at the concept and the $500,000 paid to San Francisco-based Landor & Associates), Regis Philbin (he was so puzzled and confused by the concept he couldn't even say the phase), David Letterman was even less kind. Even Baltimore's very own William Donald Schafer, former Mayor and Maryland Govenour, rang in through his spoksperson saying, "I've seen some dumb ones in the past, but this is the dumbest." Was he thinking of an earlier attempt to brand Baltimore as: THE CITY THAT READS?

So when the GET IN ON IT people announced that they were opening up a section of their site so regular folks could upload videos about what makes Baltimore special to them, I was even more dubious. What would the citizens of Charm City post that the rest of the country could make fun of?

Apparently I shouldn't have been concerned at all. Here's just one example of the clever videos that have been posted.

Take a look at some of these little gems. Many are so delightful that they could take us back to the Charm City days.

And then, wonder along with me if all of Baltimore wouldn't have been better served by calling on locals to produce these kinds of things and offering a purse of $50,000 to each of the ten best rather than sending off half-a-million bucks to a company based out west.

I'm betting that even John Waters would have entered. And, wouldn't that have been a wonderful thing?

Oh yes, if you haven't seen this tribute to William Donald Schafer you should. Yep, it's biased in his favor just as Schafer's support and promotion of Baltimore is biased to the Nth degree in our favor.

Is 21201 Becoming Too Pricey?

Looking at the direct mail we've been receiving from the newest downtown apartment buildings and from some of the recent classic building conversions... I'M JUST WONDERING...

Is this the wave of the future?

Cartoon_21201
Reviewing the prices of of Bozzuto's newest construction, the Zenith, where prices per square-foot seem rather New-Yorkish and where the apartments seem cramped on each floor, I hope this is not where we're headed.

I'm also hoping that Baltimore's westside Super-Block project will finally come about and level the playing field by increasing inventory.

At the moment many of the new City-Center apartments rent for what would be a starting mortgage payment. I'm hoping that all of this cools down until the proposed Baltimore/DC MagLev train makes Charm City a viable suburb of our Nation's Capitol. Then, it will all be fair game.

And, yes I know, I've been doing a whole lot of looking, reviewing and hoping.

Free Movie Tonight - Charles Plaza

Living in Downtown Baltimore is a wonderful thing. Last Friday we were invited to a dinner party and we walked to it. Just four blocks. And after our fair share of great company and conversation, awesome food, and several exceptional wines we walked home. The air was cool and had that clean and earthy smell that reminded us that the true Baltimore autumn is just around the corner.

Today an email arrived from the Downtown Partnership. There's a free movie, Night at the Museum, tonight at Charles Center Plaza.

It's family fare, fun and fanciful. The cast includes Ben Stiller, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Robin Williams, Paul Rudd, and Anne Meara. Oh yes, and Brad Garrett as the voice of the Easter Island head. What's not to like?

Bring a chair or blanket, grab some food at EATS - our local food court - and enjoy what looks to be a balmy and beautiful autumn evening.

It all begins a 8PM.
